Most of the conventional wisdom about underwater strobes is that brighter and wider always equals better. If you're doing macro underwater photography, you want the exact opposite. You want tightly controlled light to localise the subject and keep the background as dark as possible. The Backscatter Mini Flash MF-1 is the perfect combination of light and flash for any serious underwater macro photographer. Its tiny size can be used in the tightest of places, and the companion Optical Snoot OS-1 makes it the perfect macro flash to give you the creativity you've been missing.

Streamlined macro flash and focus light in one

.

If you've ever used a larger flash for wide-angle shots, you know it can be difficult to get into tight areas, especially with two flashes and a separate focus light. The small size of the MF-1 Backscatter Mini Flash makes it easy to manoeuvre and get into tight spaces. With powerful LED focus lights built in, there is no need for a separate focus light to be mounted on the equipment. It is a perfect companion for compact camera photographers looking for a great all-round streamlined flash solution. It is also the perfect solution for advanced mirrorless and SLR photographers who want to reduce their footprint, simplify their lighting and lighten their equipment for better shots.

Great performance in a small format

Don't let the tiny size fool you. The Backscatter Mini Flash MF-1 has a flash guide number of 16 and can produce up to 1400 flashes, and the dual-beam LED lights run at 500 lumens and high output for üover 1 hour when used with the recommended battery.

Six power levels and 3 light intensities - with large controls

.

Choose the perfect exposure with six flash power levels, while the LED lights have three power levels. A generously sized and cold-water friendly large red knob makes it easy to precisely control flash output without having to take your attention away from looking at the light position when shooting. The large, easy-to-press silver button cycles through the three power levels of the focus lamps, and a long press activates the modelling flash.

Double O-ring seal

.

The battery compartment is equipped with a double O-ring seal to protect you from O-ring maintenance errors. Of course, you will need to clean and maintain the O-rings before each use, but our double seal helps reduce water damage caused by common mistakes.

Fibre optics and automatic flash sync

.

Setting up pre-flash suppression is a breeze. Simply connect a fibre optic cable and take a test shot. The MF-1 Backscatter Mini Flash automatically detects the in-camera flash mode the first time it is switched on and stores it in memory for the first test shot. If you change cameras or settings, simply switch the MF-1 on and off and take another test shot to update the setting. You don't have to worry about the flash being set incorrectly.

Get creative with colour filters

.

Advanced photographers and beginners alike can open up some really crazy possibilities and create some surreal effects. Coloured backgrounds, backlighting and bokeh tricks are much easier to achieve with a flash than with a torch or video light. Colour filters for the MF-1 have been tested and will be delivered in the second quarter of 2020. We are ready to help you experience your delights.

MiniFlash MF-1 with snoot
Included in the package: Mini Flash MF-1 and Optical Snoot OS-1 from Backscatter Compact yet powerful flash Great for compact camera photographers. Easiest macro flash for compact, mirrorless and SLR cameras. Optional optical snoot for more creativity   The easiest to use combination of macro flash and snoot Using an underwater flash with a snoot used to be really difficult. Aiming with a light shaper required a lot of practice. Backscatter have developed the Mini Flash and Optical Snoot together to make shooting with a snoot as easy as possible. With bright LED lights that project the same beam pattern as the flash through the Snoot, you can easily see the exact position of the pilot light on your subject when choosing your bias and know that you are hitting your target. Do you have a subject that doesn't like to stay in continuous light all the time? Use the short-time modelling flash to check the placement of the light beam without constantly disturbing a light-sensitive animal. The Optical Snoot OS-1 is easy to mount, with a simple click on/off. The Optical Snoot OS-1 is small enough to fit in a pocket, making it quick and easy to switch from wide-angle to macro.   The Backscatter Mini Flash MF-1 and the Optical Snoot OS-1 were developed together from the beginning, making them the most efficient, brightest, smallest and easiest to use professional macro flash system.   Super bright snoot for dark backgrounds The key to success in snoot photography is a dark background in bright ambient light. The combination of the MF-1 Backscatter Mini Flash and OS-1 Optical Snoot has been developed together to provide the most efficient transmission of light through the snoot optics. The result is an exposure brighter than any other snoot on the market, helping you to produce the darkest backgrounds. When projecting a 6mm hole, a shot can be taken at ISO 64, 32, which is a perfect setting for getting inky black backgrounds and perfect light on the subject. The combination of backscatter mini flash MF-1 and optical snoot OS-1 has a brighter output compared to other snoot/flash combinations on the market. This shot was taken at ISO 64 and 32 with the flash at full power. No exposure adjustments were made afterwards. Precise lighting control with aperture cards The Backscatter Optical Snoot OS-1 contains 2 aperture cards, 1 circular and 1 oval, each with 4 different sized holes. Shoot a sharply focused beam of light or pull it back a little for a softer edge. Shoot a projected beam as small as 6 mm. With the full range of aperture cards, you can shoot an ultra-small subject all the way up to a large fish portrait. With the oval aperture card, if you shoot the trunk at an angle to the subject, the trunk can be rotated to change the shape of the projected beam from an elongated oval to a circle. No other strobe and snoot system offers such precise control.   One of the main features of the OS-1 optical backscatter snoot is the ability to change not only the size of the projected hole but also the shape of the light beam by simply rotating the attachment with the oval aperture card installed. Using the oval aperture card makes it possible to shape the light so that it hits the subject exactly and not the surrounding sand.
