SONY ALPHA 1 CAMERA

The Sony a1 is the company's flagship full-frame interchangeable lens camera.  Designed around the new 50.1MP Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR processor, the a1 is truly a camera which can do it all.  It's 759 point Fast Hybrid Autofocus system offers advanced subject tracking and real-time eye autofocus on both humans and animals.  The optimized processing within the a1 allows it to achieve 30fps continuous shooting at full resolution along with 8K 30p and 4K 120p 10-bit video recording.   

8K 30p recording is possible using the full width of the sensor while 4K 120p uses a 10% crop.  Through a Super 35 crop, oversampled 4K recording is also achievable, via an 5.8K capture area.  For shooters who demand more post production flexibility, 4.3K raw 16-bit recording is possible to an external recorder using the camera's full size HDMI A port.  

The a1 has also received major upgrades compared to its predecessors, including a 9.44M-dot OLED EVF with a 240fps refresh rate.  The newly designed shutter allows for flash sync speeds up to 1/400 sec and the body includes dual card slots supporting either CFexpress Type A or SD UHS-II memory cards.

THE NAUTICAM NA-a1 UNDERWATER HOUSING

Nauticam has supported the Sony Alpha full-frame line since the original a7 with professional grade aluminum housings that offer intuitive access to all the controls and functions of the cameras. As the cameras have evolved, so have the Nauticam housings. The NA-a1 underwater housing provides fingertip access to all key camera controls in a rugged and reliable aluminum underwater housing. Ergonomic camera control access is one of the defining strengths of a Nauticam housing, and the NA-a1 continues this tradition.

Integrated DSLR-housing styled handles with ergonomic rubberized grips and stainless steel stiffening brackets add stability and accessory mounting points. The NA-a1 also features dual rear thumb-levers that are easily reached from the handle that access three of the most-used controls on the rear of the camera. The right lever actuates the AF-ON and RECORD buttons while the left lever is mapped to the PLAY button.

Atop the housing on the left side are controls in the form of a MODE dial and FOCUS mode lever. The C1, C2 buttons as well as the EV compensation dial also have direct access from the top of the housing. The C3, which is typically assigned to control switching between the EVF and the LCD screen is easily reachable on the rear of the housing from the left handle.

ACCESSORY PORTS

The NA-a1 has both an M24 port at the front of the housing for both HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 connectivity (see sidebar for recommendations) as well as an M14 at the rear for the optional Vacuum Valve (25624). The housing comes with electronics pre-installed for Nauticam's Vacuum Check and Leak Detection system. This monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.

PREMIUM PROFESSIONAL OPTICS

Nauticam's wide range of ports and in-house corrective optics are the perfect compliment to the NA-a1's inherent flexibility. Built around the N100 Port System, the NA-a1 supports a wide variety of Sony FE mount lenses, as well as EF mount lenses via adapters. In addition, there are several options available to use the groundbreaking WACP and WACP-2 wide-angle corrective lenses as well as the more compact and in-water removable WWL-1B.

For example, With the Sony SEL1635GM FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM, the WACP 2 brings the original 105º field-of-view to an impressive 128º with sharper corners, an ~0" minimum focus distance and a more natural looking image than would be provided by a standard glass dome port.

FLASH TRIGGERING

Both fiber-optic and electrical strobe triggering options are available. The Nauticam Universal Fiber Optical cables attach to the built-in bulkheads atop the housing and feature modular connections for both Sea&Sea-style bushings and INON threaded connections. Triggering is achieved using the optional Nauticam Mini Flash Trigger for Sony (26302) which uses LEDs powered by an on-board coin-cell battery to generate a manual signal that is transmitter via the optical cables to compatible strobes.

Installing vacuum valve to housing Remove the plug of the M14 accessory port from the housing. Remove the cap from the vacuum valve. Tighten the vacuum valve to the housing with the tool provided. Building up vacuum Remove the cap of the vacuum valve. Connect the hand pump to the valve and pump several times until it reaches the target vacuum level. The LED light will turn flashing yellow while vacuum is building up, then steady green when the target vacuum level is reached. Attention: After the target vacuum is reached, i.e. steady green light, attach the cap back to the vacuum valve. It is recommended to leave the housing for at least 20mins to ensure it is sealed. If the LED light changes from steady green light to rapidly flashing yellow light, that means there is a leakage and please check every O-ring and conduct the vacuum test again. Please ensure that the cap is attached back to the vacuum valve before going underwater. Vacuum can be released by pushing the red release button. Attention: Please DO NOT attempt to go over the designated vacuum level, i.e. stop pumping when the LED turn green. Excessive vacuum level may lead to the malfunction of the camera and lens. Note: Although the vacuum indicator is designated to compensate for a certain amount of temperature variation, it is recommended to conduct the vacuum test in an environment where the temperature is stable. After set up, the meaning of the LED indicator in the housing: Flashing “Blue” light: Standby mode. The moisture alarm is active, and the system is ready for vacuum indication whenever a vacuum is detected. Flashing “Red” light with beeping sound:Moisture is detected. Flashing “Yellow” light: Some vacuum is detected, target vacuum level is not reached. Steady “Green” light: Target vacuum level is reached. Rapidly flashing “Yellow” light: Vacuum is dropping. (Will occur only after target vacuum level is reached) Rapidly flashing “Red” light: Vacuum is totally lost. Circuit stalled until switched off. With more cameras offering high quality HDMI video output, the Atomos Ninja V steps in, not only as a stunning monitor but also as a recorder of 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit video to on-board SSD drives in edit-friendly ProRes or Avid formats. The Nauticam NA-Ninja V, when used with supported housings and cameras, allows for the connection of the Ninja V over HDMI 2.0 in addition to providing easy access to the Ninja V controls underwater. Atomos Ninja V The Atomos Ninja V is an exceptional monitor, featuring a bright 1000 nit 10-bit HDR 5.2" screen that can display over 10 stops of dynamic range with compatible cameras. The monitor includes a variety of exposure and focus assist tools to insure your footage is properly exposed with critical focus. In addition to being an extremely capable monitor, the Ninja V is also a recorder. When used with compatible cameras over HDMI 2.0, the Ninja V can record 4K at 60p in 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes or DNxHR formats to Atomos AtomX SSDmini solid state drives. With a 1TB SSDmini drive, the Ninja V can record up to 150 minutes of 4K video. EXPOSURE TOOLS  The Ninja V exposure guides include a Waveform for luminance, RGB Parade for color balance, and Vector Scope for hue and saturation. These tools, especially useful for the underwater filmmaker, allow accurate and fast judging of exposure, even in the most uncooperative lighting scenarios. Even when recording Log or HDR footage, using Rec.709 or HLG monitoring displays the video on the screen adjusted to the levels of the chosen standard.. FOCUS TOOLS Critical focus can be achieved using various peaking tools. Focus Peaking Color displays the original color image with the sharpest areas outlined in a selectable color. Focus Peaking Mono provides the same overlay but on a monochrome image. Focus Assist Outline shows only the false color outline on a black background of the sharpest Areas.   THE NAUTICAM NA-NINJA V UNDERWATER HOUSING The Nauticam NA-Ninja V builds on the strong foundation Nauticam has built with previous Atomos monitor/recorder housings but is built around the new M28 large-bore bulkhead that supports HDMI 2.0. The Ninja V is easily mounted in the housing, dropping in without trays or other mounting accessories and is held in place by two rotating locking levers. The Ninja V features both an HDMI 2.0 input as well as an output and the NA-Ninja V supports both as well. With dual M28 bulkheads, a second HDMI cable can be run to another monitor. The Ninja V allows for the application of. cube format 3D LUTs to this output signal. The NA-Ninja V supports up to the NP-F970 size battery which provides up to two hours of run time. A CR-2032 battery powers the vacuum check and leak detection system. When used with the included Vacuum Valve, the system gives real-time feedback about the watertight integrity of the housing through an easily visible multi-color LED on the top of the housing. Access to the touchscreen controls of the Ninja V are handled via a series of buttons and a selector knob beneath the screen of the housing including PLAY, REC, MON, RGB, PEAK and the Muti-Selector Lever.
