The Canon EOS R5 is attractive to underwater image makers for a variety of reasons. It is a 45MP full frame mirrorless camera that shoots full width 8K video, utilizes Canon's new RF lens mount, and also has next generation Dual Pixel autofocus.

The Canon EOS R6 Camera

The Canon EOS R6 is one of the latest in Canon's full-frame mirrorless camera lineup which has gained unprecedented demand.  It features the RF lens mount which has the same large 54mm diameter but the ability to have larger rear lens elements that are closer to the sensor gives increased corner and outer edge sharpness. 

The R6 uses an 20MP CMOS sensor which is closely related to the one used in the Canon 1D X Mark III flagship camera.  It offers in-body image stabilization rated at up to 8 stops of correction.  The camera's Dual Pixel autofocus system uses 1053 autofocus points across the entire frame.   It is also capable of recording 4K video at up to 60p and 1080 at up to 120p.  

The EOS R6 can also use the large EF-mount lens lineup via three optional adapters, a simple EF to R adapter, one which supports the customizable control ring and another that features a drop-in filter mount.

The Nauticam Underwater Housing for the Canon EOS R6 Camera

The NA-R6 underwater housing follows suit with Nauticam's drive for innovation. Both the Canon EOS R5 and EOS R6 present shooters with the ability to use both the available legacy EF lenses via an adapter in addition to their native RF optics.  To support both the legacy and native lenses, Nauticam has integrated the NA-R6 into the N120 port system. Canon's EF to RF mount adapters can be affixed to the camera before insertion into the housing. When using the EOS R6 inside the housing with the adapter and a supported EF lens, the port and extension ring arrangement will be identical to the same setup on a Nauticam Canon N120 DSLR. As the RF lens lineup emerges, dedicated port and extension ring combinations will be listed on the Port Chart. Two lens release buttons, one for RF and one for EF lenses used with the optional Canon adapter, are located on the front of the housing to make lens removal through the port opening simple.

Mission Control

Nauticam engineers are obsessed with getting the underwater image maker unfettered access to all the necessary controls, with as many within easy reach of the ergonomic rubberized handles. This Mission Control philosophy extends to the NA-R6 where a dual thumb lever and dual sub-lever are placed by the right handle. The upper thumb lever activates the "AF-On" and the lower the "Q" buttons while the sub-lever corresponds to the "M-Fn" and "Record" buttons. Near the left handle is a thumb lever for "Playback" as well as a dedicated switch to change from using LCD to the EVF.

Large knurled and rubberized control dials access the camera's "main" and "sub" command dials. The two-stage trigger allows for smooth focus and firing activation. Additional buttons for "Menu", "Focus Point Selection" and others are also easily reached from the handles.

An additional control wheel is located on the left side of the housing and will interface with the control ring on the supported EF to EOS R Mount Adapter with Control Ring using the optional gear (NA19561).

Flash Triggering

Flash triggering is achieved via one of two optional Flash Triggers, a manual LED trigger (NA26301) or a TTL Flash Trigger (NA26321) that use the built-in fiber optic bulkheads with optional fiber-optic cables to trigger supported strobes. For controlling strobes that do not support fiber optic flash triggering, a variety of legacy hot-shoe flash control bulkheads are available.

Integrated Vacuum Check and Leak Detection System

The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection electronics are shipped with the NA-R6 as standard equipment. Combined with an accessory vacuum valve (NA25625) this monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur.

The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.

Atomos Ninja V The Atomos Ninja V is an exceptional monitor, featuring a bright 1000 nit 10-bit HDR 5.2" screen that can display over 10 stops of dynamic range with compatible cameras. The monitor includes a variety of exposure and focus assist tools to insure your footage is properly exposed with critical focus. In addition to being an extremely capable monitor, the Ninja V is also a recorder. When used with compatible cameras over HDMI 2.0, the Ninja V can record 4K at 60p in 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes or DNxHR formats to Atomos AtomX SSDmini solid state drives. The Ninja V allows for the application of. cube format 3D LUTs to this output signal. The NA-Ninja V supports up to the NP-F970 size battery which provides up to two hours of run time. Flash Trigger

Manual Flash trigger for Canon
Flash emitters enable fast shooting sequences, perfect for fast motion sequences. Since the pop-up flash is not used, the camera doesn't have to wait for the pop-up flash to recycle, which means faster shooting, less heat buildup, and longer camera battery life. Shoot as fast as your external flashes can. This flash output is manual only; automatic flash exposure (TTL) is not currently possible.   Supported flashes include all RetraFlashes, the Inon Z-240 Type 4, D-2000 Type 4, S-2000, Sea&Sea YS-250*, YS-01, and YS-D1. Photographing with fiber optic cables means shooting safely. There are no sync cords to get damaged in floods or corrosion, which means much higher reliability, and the flash can even be removed from the rig while underwater to allow for off-camera lighting. The flash output for Canon weighs less than 70 grams, including batteries, and attaches to the hot shoe of the camera, which is fixed with a locking lever. M14 Vacuum Valve II
Installing vacuum valve to housing Remove the plug of the M14 accessory port from the housing. Remove the cap from the vacuum valve. Tighten the vacuum valve to the housing with the tool provided. Building up vacuum Remove the cap of the vacuum valve. Connect the hand pump to the valve and pump several times until it reaches the target vacuum level. The LED light will turn flashing yellow while vacuum is building up, then steady green when the target vacuum level is reached. Attention: After the target vacuum is reached, i.e. steady green light, attach the cap back to the vacuum valve. It is recommended to leave the housing for at least 20mins to ensure it is sealed. If the LED light changes from steady green light to rapidly flashing yellow light, that means there is a leakage and please check every O-ring and conduct the vacuum test again. Please ensure that the cap is attached back to the vacuum valve before going underwater. Vacuum can be released by pushing the red release button. Attention: Please DO NOT attempt to go over the designated vacuum level, i.e. stop pumping when the LED turn green. Excessive vacuum level may lead to the malfunction of the camera and lens. Note: Although the vacuum indicator is designated to compensate for a certain amount of temperature variation, it is recommended to conduct the vacuum test in an environment where the temperature is stable. After set up, the meaning of the LED indicator in the housing: Flashing “Blue” light: Standby mode. The moisture alarm is active, and the system is ready for vacuum indication whenever a vacuum is detected. Flashing “Red” light with beeping sound:Moisture is detected. Flashing “Yellow” light: Some vacuum is detected, target vacuum level is not reached. Steady “Green” light: Target vacuum level is reached. Rapidly flashing “Yellow” light: Vacuum is dropping. The next generation Nauticam Full Angle Straight Viewfinder is the perfect addition to your housing as it provides a bright, clear and undistorted 1:1 image of the camera’s viewfinder and is essential for precise focusing and artistic composition.  This viewfinder is also available in an 0.8:1 version that can also accommodate viewing of the entire image field on cameras with larger EVFs such as the Sony A1. The Full Frame Angle Viewfinder also provides more clearance for your regulator allowing for more a more comfortable viewing position, installs in seconds without tools and retains the hassle-free underwater dioptric adjustment feature. The viewfinder can also be rotated when using the camera in a portrait orientation.
