Mechanics

A realisation without compromise, robustness, precision and workmanship at the highest level.

  • High-quality, hard-anodised, anti-corodal aluminium flash body.
  • Stainless steel control shafts with double-sealing O-ring.
  • Extremely stable construction, maximum operating depth 200 m

The body consists of a solid block of anti-corodal aluminium alloy machined with state-of-the-art multi-axis CNC machining centres. The aluminium is surface treated and protected by a hard anodic oxidation with a nanotech quartz coating that makes the surface hydrophobic.

All control shafts are made of stainless steel with double-sealing O-ring. The various engineering polymers selected for the moulding are extremely robust and ideal for use in water.

The robustness of the design allows the underwater flash to be used in all technical dives, hyperbaric tests are carried out at pressures equivalent to a depth of 200 metres.

Operating elements

Ergonomics in the foreground. Basic, large, easy to use.

  • Large format ergonomic controls, really easy to use
  • Simple and rational layout, large manoeuvring area
  • Easy to read, wide control display

To achieve these results, the engineers designed the layout of the controls to simplify and streamline their functionality: no buttons, no switches, just two large lever selectors, a multifunction rotary switch and a large, easy-to-read control panel.

This simplification, combined with the elimination of connection sockets and associated cables near the control, has made it possible to have a large operating area that allows a wide view of the selected settings and enables easy operation even with gloves on.

The side lever selector switches, the rotary knob, the open-close selector switch for the battery compartment cover have been developed according to strict ergonomic criteria to achieve optimum operating comfort and grip safety.

The controls for their configuration are insensitive to hydrostatic pressure. You will operate them with the same effort at any depth.

Easy to use, logical and intuitive operation, good clarity.

  • Shooting modes: Nikon i-TTL, Canon E-TTL, s-TTL, film TTL, manual
  • Energy control - manual mode - ½ aperture steps in the range of - 6
  • Exposure compensation - TTL mode - ? Aperture steps over a range of +/- 2

The red main switch on the left controls the focus lamp (in the two available powers) and the TTL flash modes, via sync cable and via fibre optic cable connection.

The protocol selection (Nikon i-TTL, Canon E-TTL, optical s-TTL) is automatic. The control lamps ??-PL-TTL indicate flash readiness, the switching on of the control lamp or the selection of the TTL mode.

The black INPUT lever selector switch on the right-hand side allows us to choose the input and connection mode we want: Sync cable jack, fibre optic cable jack, optical receiver on reflector for slave mode. The indicator lights show the selected SYN-OPT-SLV input.

Power control is delegated to the central rotary switch, which operates an encoder.

In manual mode, the setting is ½ aperture steps over a range of - 6, while when TTL mode is selected, the exposure compensation control function is assigned to ? F-stops over a range of +/- 2.

The selected setting for power or exposure compensation is clearly visible in the centre area of the large display. Simultaneous one-hand operation of the left and right lever selector switches the unit on and off.

RetraFlash PRO Underwater Strobe
Developed by underwater photographers for underwater photographers - with this claim Retra UWT has dedicated itself to the development of one of the best underwater flash units in the world.  Focus on light quality With a unique flash tube design and a completely new reflector, Retra-UWT has achieved a light output that no other flash unit of this size can offer. But it is not only about guide numbers. "All you need to remember about guide numbers is not to use them as a guide when buying a flash. The guide number is determined by both the light output and the spread of the beam. A focused beam produces a much higher guide number than a widely scattered beam, but the latter is more desirable underwater." Alex Mustard in the Underwater Photography Masterclass (2016) The user interface created by photographers By listening to underwater photographers using the original Retra Flash, the developers have optimized the user interface. The interaction and functionality of the new Retra Flash is even more intuitive and precise. Double O-ring and leak detector for the battery compartment Our goal is to achieve a 0% statistic for battery compartment flooding. Therefore we introduce a double O-ring on the battery cover and on the optional leak detector. In the unlikely event that the battery compartment is flooded, you will be notified by the Retra Flash to check the battery compartment as soon as possible.  Performance in numbers Flash power: 150 Ws Colour temperature: 4900 K Pilot light output (angle): 500 lm (20º) Recycling time at 100% power (4x Eneloop pro): ~3 s HSS ready: YES Power levels: 13 Leak detector: YES Bayonet connection type: A1 Electrical connection: via converter Optical connection (compatible with Inon and Sea&Sea connectors): YES Weight (without batteries, including 1" mounting ball): 790 g

RED64 Underwater flash by Isotta
Isotta's RED64 underwater flash features a careful design, shielded electronics isolated from the control panel and a microprocessor with upgradable software that guarantees high-quality performance in time. It is also neutrally buoyant in water and waterproof up to 100 metres. Thanks to a xenon toroidal lamp and a warm colour temperature of 5300 K, which is essential for displaying bright colours underwater, the flash unit emits a wide and homogeneous light distribution without a hot spot. One of the most powerful flash units on the market, it offers photographers maximum light in any situation, illuminating details even in the darkest waters or against the light. Very bright, even in the water! The RED64 underwater flash from Isotta has a guide number of 22 in water (at 1 metre distance, 100 ISO), which allows for great performance underwater and is ideal for shooting against sunlight and with large or distant subjects. Its 130° degree beam angle is achieved by its parabolic aluminium shell, which distributes the light without a diffuser and avoids backscatter. The flash has a two-colour aiming light (white and red) to choose from depending on the photographer's needs. Unlike any other high-power flash on the market, the battery section allows photographers to use their own 8 high quality Ni-MH AA batteries in a compartment separate and sealed from the electronics. This not only allows flexibility in location, but also a great cost saving. Ergonomic design The RED64 underwater flash from Isotta is ergonomically designed and the controls are visible from every angle. A multi-coloured LED indicates activity and flash readiness as well as battery status. The strobe can be controlled automatically or manually: RED64 can be operated with an optical fibre cable that works in TTL mode and also in manual mode. Alternatively, it can be operated with sync cable through an S6 bulkhead or Nikonos V or even in slave mode to work without a cable. Operation 1. selector switch: OFF/Manual/TTL; 2. selector switch manual power regulation 1 switch Focus light: ON / White light / Red light; LED indicator: GREEN (100% full battery)  YELLOW (40%) ORANGE (20%)  RED (3% low battery) BLUE (TTL-C -> TTL syncro cable) / LIGHT BLUE (TTL-F -> TTL fibre) / GREEN (M-C/F -> hand cable or fibre) / VIOLET (M-F -> hand-held fibre with pre-flash)

YS-D2 (J) Underwater Strobe
A good underwater photo needs a good underwater flash! With the new version of the YS-D2 Sea&Sea has once again improved its lightest flash. The TTL function has been reworked once again. Now you can concentrate on what really matters: Your creativity!  The color temperature of at 5600 Kelvin (5250K with diffuser). With its recharge time after a flash to full load of 1.5 seconds, the YS-D2 J is particularly fast. Excellent visibility at night The illuminated control panel is ideal for night diving. The color of the illumination ächanges to indicate the mode: aqua blue (in DS-TTL mode), blue (in slave TTL mode), orange (in manual pre-flash mode) and green (in manual mode without pre-flash). You can üt check which mode the strobe is set to even under pitch black conditions. In slave TTL mode   In manual pre-flash mode   In manual mode without pre-flash Powerful flash with short recycling time The YS-D2 is powerful enough to illuminate a wide area, even in very bright conditions with lots of natural sunlight. For macro shooting where subtle exposure control is required, manual mode can be easily selected and the light level adjusted. Recycling time is only 1.5 seconds (when nickel hydride AA batteries are used.) DS-TTL ll automatic exposure control with improved accuracy and stability The DS-TTL ll automatic exposure control system developed by Seea&Sea has been further improved. Detailed tuning of light exit timing and the addition of the light emission detection function have significantly improved the accuracy of automatic TTL exposure. Previously, TTL photography with the lens aperture wide open was difficult (maximum aperture) and images were likely to be üoverexposed. It is now possible to use a low-power flash, so proper exposure can be easily achieved with the YS-D2 J.   In DS-TTL II mode The f-stop control can fine-tune the amount of light By controlling the actual flash light level, the flash achieves accurate exposure compensation with f-stop correction. Since the exposure compensation range has improved to +/- 2.0 f-stops, users can focus on capturing even more creative images. (-2.0EV, -1.5EV, -1EV, -0.7EV, -0.3EV, +0.3EV, +0.7EV, +1EV, +1.5EV, +2.0EV). Two diffusers and red filters included with the strobe as standard By attaching one of the included diffusers, the beam angle is increased to 100° or 120° (circular) with a soft and even light. The red pilot light filter helps to avoid disturbing or even scaring away creatures that would likely react to normal light. The red filter can be installed and removed in the diffuser passages. Diffuser100 für YS-D1/D2 diffuser (standard accessory) Diffuser120 für YS-D1/D2 diffuser (standard accessory)   Diffuser with attached red filter The pilot light can be adjusted in 2 levels The flash is equipped with a target light (about 100/300 lumens). When in use (pilot switch in the ON position), the light is automatically turned off when the flash is turned off and turns back on automatically after 0.5 seconds. Ergonomically improved controls The handling is significantly improved. Larger knobs and a new magnetic rotary switch prevent accidental resetting of the controls during operation. With the new controls, quick operation is possible when sudden photo opportunities arise. Custom mode is a new innovation that allows the YS-D2 to be compatible with cameras that have non-standard pre-flash settings. Some manufacturers use their own pre-flash timings for their cameras. The new custom function allows the YS-D2 to be compatible with cameras with non-standard pre-flash settings in DS-TTLII and manual modes Attaching the YS-D2 The flash can be attached to an arm using the YS mount or the ball mount (ball mount is included). Choosing the right cable Choose either a fiber optic cable (optional) or a sync cable (optional) to connect the flash, depending on your camera and housing. A fiber optic cable is required to use the DS-TTL ll function.
