TTL and HSS on the RetraFlash

Fantastic TTL accuracy allows photographers to relax and rely entirely on automatic flash exposure control. Many creative tasks are made possible by using extremely fast HSS shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 with the Retra Pro flash in manual mode. The TTL converter firmware also has some other important updates related to its common functionality.

  • The Retra PRO profile can be set by the user üvia the TTL converter's built-in rotary switch.
  • The TTL/M modes can be switched underwater simply by using the camera name or the flash button.
  • In manual mode, the flash intensity can be adjusted manually üvia the camera wheel/scale, but also üvia the flash control knob.
  • (+/-) TTL flash compensation is supported by the firmware, the full range is available via the camera control in the range -3ev......+3ev.
  • The firmware supports sync settings for the 1-st /2-nd curtain and the rear curtain.
  • Continuous (serial) recording is supported.
  • The HSS firmware of the TTL converter supports the HSS functionality of the Retra Pro flash. The built-in rotary switch must be set to the Retra Pro profile (position - "7"). Available HSS shutter speeds for Sony A7-A9: 1/320 ....1/8000 sec. The Retra flash allows the HSS flash intensity to be adjusted with the rotary knob.
  • In the updated firmware, switching to HSS shutter speeds is also included in the general functionality of the TTL converter (also for all other positions of the rotary switch), - usable for shooting with ambient light at high shutter speeds if required. However, the X-Sync speed limit (1/250 for Sony A7-A9) is still automatically supported for TTL modes, as required for mono flash TTL underwater flash.
  • Incredibly long battery life in the TTL converter: 1-3 years of continuous operation. The product has extremely low power consumption.
  • The converter features an automatic on/off switching module that saves battery power. No mechanical switch is required to switch UW Technics TTL converters on and off.
  • The TTL converter firmware includes TTL profiles for the following underwater flashes: Retra Pro, Inon Z-330/ Z-240/S-2000, Sea&Sea YS-D2/ YS-D1/ YS-250, Ikelite DS-161/ DS-160 and Subtronic Pro-270/Pro-160. Each profile can be easily set by the user üvia an onboard switch.
  • Full compatibility with all SONY mirrorless cameras, regardless of model and TTL protocol version.

Sony A7 II/A7IIR Underwater Housing by Nauticam
The NA-A7II looks very similar to the NA-A7 and the housings have about the same dimensions. Nevertheless, this is an underwater housing specially tuned for the Sony alpha 7 Mark II. The NA-A7II comes with integrated adjustable grips that feature Nauticam's famous rubberized grip. The AF/MF/AEL button has been specially equipped on the right side of the grip with a direct access lever that can be reached instantly with the right thumb. This allows the button to be programmed for AF-ON, which means that "thumb focus" fans have perfect functionality. The output can be operated at the same time, allowing simultaneous focusing and shooting. As with many Nauticam housings, the playback button is placed on the left thumb, and the three adjustment ratios (shutter speed, aperture, and exposure compensation) can be set quickly and with minimal reach. The ISO button is located immediately near the right thumb, important for videographers. The record button is located in the upper right, preventing shake when starting/stopping video. Underwater Tribe | NA-A7II from Nauticam on Vimeo. The function menu button öopens the general camera settings for a quick menu, and this button is not far away with the right thumb. The programmable C3 button is very accessible and can be programmed for one of several functions. The housing features a switch to toggle between the electronic viewfinder and LCD, allowing quick and safe switching between viewing modes, and supports Nauticam's familiar magnifying viewfinders. A Nauticam mini flash output designed specifically for Sony is an available option that enables the camera to shoot quickly with flood-proof optical cables. The housing includes an M16 connector for an optional HDMI output, Nikonos sync cable, or other external accessory. The NA-A7II accommodates the camera's unexpectedly large grip. Rather than compromise on image quality, Nauticam designers chose to create ports to account for this difference, hence a separate entry in the port table for this housing. High-quality professional look Sony's original A7 and A7R cameras sparked a lot of interest in using full-frame for mirrorless cameras. For the underwater photographer, this enthusiasm quickly waned due to the relatively limited lens selection. Underwater photographers rely on very wide angle lenses and macro lenses, and these were nowhere to be found. This changed spätestens with the release of a 16-35mm wide-angle zoom. This is a lens from the Sony Zeiss partnership, designated the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS. It's a terrific straight wide-angle zoom that focuses close and offers very good all-around sharpness with medium to large dome ports. Nauticam's 180mm dome is the ideal choice for this lens. For macro lovers, Sony has launched a 90mm macro lens (Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS). Also available now is a 28mm f/2 lens with fisheye adapter, äsimilar to what Sony did with the fisheye and wide-angle adapter on the 16mm lens for the NEX series. This is an attractive option for fisheye lenses, as it allows for multiple configurations with a single lens. Owners of Canon full-frame lenses such as the EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye USM, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM or EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM will appreciate the versatility of their lenses with the A7 series. This is made possible by a Metabones adapter (Canon EF Lens to Sony NEX Smart Adapter (Mark III or Mark IV)). These lenses are well suited for the A7 series and allow both aperture and autofocus control via the camera. Finder options Precision requires foresight: a camera like the Sony A7 II / A7RII requires perfect focus for optimal results. Fortunately, Nauticam has developed the most user-friendly interchangeable viewfinders on the market. The standard optical glass viewfinder is very good and travel friendly, but many photographers prefer the convenience of a magnified viewfinder with adjustable diopters. Nauticam produces a "straight" 180º magnifying viewfinder and a 45º angled magnifying viewfinder to facilitate the tight-space work often associated with macro shooting. Both viewfinders feature high-quality optics and allow bright viewing of the entire image. A patented external diopter adjustment allows for personalized, pin-sharp adjustment underwater. Viewfinder changes can be performed in less than 30 seconds without tools. Exceptional composition and focus accuracy have never been so accessible.  Vacuum inspection and leak detection system The Nauticam vacuum prüf and leak detection system is available as standard with NA-A7II. Combined with an optional vacuum valve, this monitoring system provides constant updates on the watertight and submersible condition of the housing. The operator can see at a glance the watertight and submersible condition of the walker. A simple coded LED lighting system indicates to the user if the vacuum is stable or if the walker is losing vacuum. Leak detection is integrated into the same circuit so that an audible and visual indication is given when water enters.

Sony A9 Underwater Housing by Nauticam

Sony A7R III and A7III Underwater Housing by Nauticam
Sony, pioneers of the full-frame mirrorless camera with their A7 line have brought us their latest iteration and it is awesome. Taking cues from the just-released A9 the A7RIII adds better autofocus, faster continuous shooting, and the still-awesome 5-axis stabilization rated at an amazing 5.5 stops. 4K is recorded from downsampled 5K using the full sensor width or the Super 35 crop mode is also available for a little in-camera zoom. THE SONY ALPHA A7R III The Sony a7R III is the company's latest high-resolution full frame mirrorless camera. Much like Nikon's recent D850, it's one that combines resolution with high speed and fast autofocus capabilities to a degree we've not previously seen. The Sony a7R III achieved an overall DxOMark sensor score of 100 points, the same as the Nikon D850. This makes it the highest-scoring mirrorless system camera to date, beating the A7R II by two points. The a7R III is built around it's 42MP BSI CMOS sensor and can shoot up to ten frames per second. 4K footage can be captured either from the full width of the sensor or from a Super 35 size crop. The camera can also shoot 1080p video at up to 120p and has a function to conform this footage back down to 24 or 30p, if you want out-of-camera slow-mo. These functions are also available from both the full width of the sensor or from the cropped region. 5-axis image stabilization ('Steadyshot') is available in all modes. The a7R III inherits many of the lessons learned from the company's pro-sports model, the a9. This means faster processing, improved autofocus, improved handling and ergonomics, as well as the adoption of a much larger battery! Sony A7 IV Underwater Housing by Nauticam
It's been three years since the release of the Sony α7III full-frame mirrorless camera and the followup α7IV delivers many of the new features we've seen in other models packaged into this true hybrid imaging system.  A new high-resolution 33MP BSI sensor powered by the BIONZ XR processor delivers 4k60p internal capture without crop in 4:2:2 10-bit 600Mbps quality or 30p downsampled from the full 7K sensor width.  Paired with massively improved autofocus, 15+ stops of dynamic range and new Active Mode 5-axis stabilization makes this a powerful high resolution photo and video platform worthy of the α7 badging. THE SONY ALPHA 7 IV Camera The Sony α7 line of full-frame mirrorless cameras has long been at the forefront of offering a variety of models with similar form factor that are geared towards different shooting styles.  With the α7 RIII and RIV, the focus was on low-light video-centric and ultra high resolution respectively while the α7IV marries the two to create a true hybrid shooting platform.  The Exmor R backside-illuminated 33MP full-frame sensor delivers high resolution still photos while leveraging the large sensor size to provide ultra-sharp and color-rich video downsampled from the full 7K sensor width. Camera Specs 33MP full-frame Exmor R™ BSI CMOS sensor with BIONZ XR™ processor 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 video without crop 4K 30p 10-bit 4:2:2 downsampled from full sensor width 7K w/o pixel binning Real-time Eye-AF for humans and animals S-Log3 gamma for maximum Dyanmic Range capture 5-axis in-body image stabilization AUTOFOCUS The α7IV's improved autofocus system borrows heavily from Sony's other α series releases of late using their Fast Hybrid AF system which combines phase-detection and contrast-detection to provide fast and accurate focus.  The AF area is expanded to cover almost 94% of the frame with 759 AF-points.  Sony's latest Real Time Tracking and Eye AF modes promise to provide both accurate focus tracking for stills and video.  A new Focus Map feature allows for easier visualization of depth of field when filming. to help insure the critical parts of your subject are sharp. 4K VIDEO 4K 60p video captured with 10-bit 4:2:2 quality at up yo 600Mbps without crop sets the α7IV squarely with its peers in video capabilities.  Adding in the option to capture 30p downsampled from the full 7K sensor width gives the user the option to choose the right mode for their shooting style.  Capturing video in the S-Log3 gamma profile gives access to the camera's full 15+ stops of dynamic range for increased latitude in post processing. IMPROVED CONTROLS In addition to upgrading the autofocus, video and still capture  capabilities of the camera, the α7IV also now has the option to maintain discrete settings for video and still modes.  The dedicated dial atop the camera makes switching between modes hassle free.  The menu system has also been upgraded to make navigation easier and more similar to other recent models. NAUTICAM NA-A7IV UNDERWATER HOUSING The NA-A7IV underwater housing by Nauticam is designed as an optimized solution for both underwater still and moving image capture.  Outfitted with Nauticam's extensive lineup of accessories, the NA-A7IV can be customized to excel in either role.  The latest in a long lineup of Sony mirrorless system housings, the NA-A7IV features the same intuitively placed controls, easy setup, and rugged reliability user's have come to expect. MISSION CONTROL Never miss a shot looking for a button or dial.  Regardless of where the control may be found on the camera, Nauticam engineers have placed that control on the housing where it is needed most.  Essential dials and buttons are within easy reach of the reinforced ergonomic handles.  Atop the housing, a new dedicated lever allows quick switching between Still, Movie and S&Q (VFR Video) modes.  A dual thumb lever near the right handle actuates the REC and AF-ON buttons and a single lever near the left handle is for PLAYBACK.   HDMI 2.0 A large bore M24 bulkhead is located at the front of the housing for use with HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 1.4 (with a step-down adapter to M16) external monitors and recorders.  An additional M10 threaded mounting position near the front center of the housing also makes using an external monitor even easier.  The A7IV can output 4:2:2 10-bit 4K at up to 60fps to external recorders allowing for recording in edit-friendly codecs such as ProRes.  See the resources sidebar for additional details and recommended setups. PREMIUM PROFESSIONAL OPTICS Built around the N100 Port System for Sony E-Mount, the NA-A7IV can support a wide variety of native lenses with a selection of Optical Glass and Acrylic ports.  When used with an E-Mount to EF-mount lens adapter and an N100 to N120 adapter (see Resources sidebar for supported adapters), the NA-A7IV can be used with the Canon N120 EF-Mount port system, expanding the capabilities of the system even further.  Going beyond conventional optics the NA-A7IV can leverage the unparalleled optical quality of Nauticam's Water Contact optics such as the WACP-1 which offers up to 130º field-of-view, full zoom through, an almost 0" minimum focus distance with supported lenses.  For macro, the SMC-1 and SMC-2 deliver tack-sharp super-macro magnification levels up to 4x with the Sony 90mm macro lens. VACUUM CHECK AND LEAK DETECTION The housing comes with electronics pre-installed for Nauticam's Vacuum Check and Leak Detection system, requiring only the optional M14 Vacuum Valve (25624). This monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive. STROBE TRIGGERING Triggering of external strobes is accomplished via the integrated fiber-optic bulkheads when using the optional Mini Flash Trigger for Sony (26302).  Electronic triggering is also via an optional Nikonos Bulkhead.  Note that when using this with the Vacuum Valve will require the optional M14 Offset Connector with Vacuum Valve II (25026).

Light source This is a high-performance strobe that pursues quality of light, and its high luminous flux and wide beam angle are effective for wide-angle photography with fish-eye lenses and other wide-angle lenses. The strobe also features our proprietary light distribution technology. High light intensity GN33 The light output has a guide number (GN) of 33, one of the highest among general-purpose underwater strobes. The use of two discharge tubes increases power and achieves GN 33 at full flashing. Two discharge tubes Uniform and even light distribution The originally developed "aspherical toroidal lens" is placed in front of the light-emitting tube, and the two discharge tubes and the "aspherical toroidal lens" provide uniform and even light distribution to the periphery, making it an ideal light source for external Illumination. Aspherical optical troidal lens Adjust beam angle with diffuser The beam angle is 80°×105° without the diffuser and 100°×110° with the included diffuser for soft lighting. When the optional dome diffuser is attached, the beam angle increases to 150°×170°. The dome diffuser is effective when using a fisheye lens or when lighting with soft light (guide number is reduced by approximately -1.5 EV). Without diffuser With attached diffuser (optional) Dome diffuser installed Operability Sea&Seas particular emphasis on ease of use, especially underwater handling. The more you use it, the more you will appreciate its easy-to-turn dial, easy-to-see panel display, and good underwater balance. Large dial Underwater operation is performed with the mode switch and light intensity control dial. The large dials are non-slip and the height difference allows smooth operation even when wearing thick gloves. It is designed to stop in steps with a click-click to minimize malfunctions. Large dial Easy-to-read backlit panel The indicator color changes each time the mode switch is repositioned. Blue (in DS-TTLII mode), red (in RC mode), yellow (in manual mode with pre-flash), and green (in manual mode without pre-flash) are the different colors for identification, so positioning of the controls is easy to see even when night diving. In DS-TTLII mode In RC mode In manual non pre-flash mode Underwater Balance YS-D3 DUO by Sea&Sea has almost zero buoyancy with the ball mount and clamp in place. Heavy underwater weight requires unexpected force to operate the clamp, but the YS-D3 DUO is unaffected by buoyancy, so operation is smooth. Even if you change the strobe position, the underwater balance of the entire housing set does not change significantly and you can feel how easy it is to handle. Two patterns of target lights The LED target light function is useful for focusing and checking the beam angle of the strobe. Choose either 300 lumens or 150 lumens depending on the situation. 300 lumen 150 lumen One-touch battery replacement The power source is AA batteries, which are widely distributed in general. Four of the same type (1.5V alkaline AA batteries and 1.2V nickel-hydrogen AA batteries). The battery box is opened and closed by a bayonet type that does not put a burden on the O-ring. It is a one-touch operation and does not require force like the screw-in type. Hook for Fiber Optics A hook for fiber-optic cable on the strobe body smartly guides the fiber-optic cable. How to connect with the arm of your choice A straight type ball base is included, but the YS base or Strobe Ball Base 35 can be attached as an option depending on the application. (optional) YS base (optional) Diagonal ball base Accessories A wide variety of accessories expand the shooting range. Snoot An adapter that turns a strobe light into a spot light. An internal prism allows the optical axis of the target light to be perfectly aligned with the optical axis of the strobe light. The beam aperture is 25mm and the use of a snoot cuts off light around the subject to make only the subject stand out. Dome diffuser Diffuser that widens the beam angle to 150° x 170°. Light intensity is reduced by approximately -1.5 EV (GN28). Flash prism Light guiding prism that can emit YS-D3 DUO light without using a fiber-optic cable; supports RC mode and manual Emission.
