Humpback whales with their young on an (almost) unknown South Sea island

Niue is an island in the Pacific Ocean - one of the smallest countries and one of the largest uplifted coral atolls in the world. It lies 2,400 kilometres north-east of New Zealand. Due to its isolated location and geological uniqueness, the ocean there offers visibility of 50 metres and more. The ideal place to observe and photograph whales in their natural environment.

Every year between July and October, humpback whales migrate through Polynesia to raise their calves. There are only a few places in the world where we can snorkel with these giants of the sea. There are currently only 3 diving and snorkelling operators in Niue with a handful of boats in total. We therefore expect little to no boat traffic on the water.

Niue is one of the places in the world with particularly low light pollution. So you can look forward to marvellous Milky Way photography!

Our Journey

We spend 11 days on the water snorkelling with the humpback whales. As Niue juts out of the Pacific like a rocky outcrop, they come extremely close to the coast and we often see the whales from the hotel or harbour. The lack of sandy beaches or rivers on the island gives us visibility of 50 metres and more. Ideal for whale photography.

There is a maximum of 5 people plus guide on our boat. As no more than one group is ever allowed to approach the whales, a truly "familiar" encounter with the giants of the sea is guaranteed.
We have our own minibus at our disposal for the entire duration of the tour. This means we can explore the fantastic island with its impressive coastline and caves on our own at any time.
Come with us on a journey that few people have ever made and that is a true experience for ocean lovers. You will never forget feeling the whale songs and the majestic encounters!

Scenic Matavai Resort

As the only full service resort on Niue, the Scenic Matavai Resort offers the best of both worlds — an uncrowded, authentic Niuean experience with the convenience of contemporary luxury. Enjoy watching Humpback Whales and Spinner Dolphins right from the deck while enjoying a meal from of the two onsite restaurants and finish the evening with cocktails by the pool.
