The long awaited Sony a7S III brings high frame-rate 4K video with incredible low-light sensitivity to the A7 full frame mirrorless lineup. The video-centric follow up to the a7S II adds internal 10-bit 4:2:2 4K capture at up to 120fps while building on the a7S II's already segment leading low-light capabilities. Upgrades also extend to the 9.44M dot OLED viewfinder, 759-point phase detection autofocus and reduced rolling shutter.

THE SONY ALPHA  A7S III CAMERA

Built around a new 12.1MP Exmor RS BSI CMOS sensor coupled with a BIONZ XR image processor, the a7S III is a powerful video oriented mirrorless full-frame camera. The long awaited follow up to the a7 SII, which set the standard for low-light capabilities in the full-frame mirrorless segment, brings not only improvements to that key spec but also a host of other notable upgrades.

Key Camera Specs

NAUTICAM NA-A7SIII UNDERWATER HOUSING

Nauticam is the leader in producing intuitively designed precision manufactured aluminum underwater housings for the Sony a7 camera line and continues to innovate with the new NA-A7SIII housing.

The NA-A7SIII is designed to maximize the video-centric capabilities of the Sony a7S III camera while maintaining it's strong still image potential.  The NA-A7SIII is built around the N100 port system that is shared with the rest of the Nauticam housing lineup for the Sony full-frame mirrorless a7 series.  The N100 system includes a dull range of both macro and wide-angle ports as well as delivering access to the lineup of Nauticam's professional wet optics that are optimized for underwater imaging such as the WACP-1/2 and the SMC-1/2 lenses.  These optics deliver unparalleled image quality underwater expanding what is possible with the powerful a7S III camera.

HDMI Output

The a7S III can output 16-bit raw video signal over HDMI and the NA-A7SIII features an M24 bulkhead that supports the HDMI 2.0 standard.  This allows the NA-A7SIII to be used in conjunction with either a recording monitor such as the Atomos Ninja V in the NA-NinjaV housing  via HDMI 2.0 or standalone monitors such as the SmallHD 502 Bright in the NA-502B housings via HDMI 1.4.

Optional Magnifying Viewfinder

The a7S III camera features an updated 9.44M-dot OLED viewfinder with a 120fps refresh rate.  Nauticam's line of optional magnifying viewfinders, available in both an angled 45º (32203) or straight 180º (NA32201) configuration provide enhanced viewing ability as well as a dioptric adjustment knob that can used underwater.  Installation can be achieved without tools in less than a minute.

Mission Control

Nauticam engineer's Mission Control design philosophy means controls are intuitively placed where they are needed most regardless of their position on the camera.  The NA-A7SIII features a double thumb lever within easy reach of the right handle that triggers the AF-ON and RECORD controls of the camera.  A thumb lever on the left side toggles the PLAYBACK button.  The back panel of the housing provides access to all other rear camera controls including a multidirectional pad.

Vacuum Check and Leak Detection System

The Nauticam vacuum check and leak detection system is shipped with NA-A7SIII as standard equipment. With the addition of the optional M14 Vacuum Valve (NA25624) this monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.

Optoelectronic TTL converter (for SONY) for NAUTICAM underwater housings NA- NA-A7 II, A7R III, A7RIV, A9, A9 II. Compatible underwater flashes: Inon Z-330 / Z-240 / S-220, Sea&Sea YS-D1 / YS-D3 Mark II / YS-250, Ikelite DS-230 / DS160 / DS160 DS-125, Subtronic Pro-270 / Pro-160, RetraFlash PRO TTL and HSS on the RetraFlash Fantastic TTL accuracy allows photographers to relax and rely entirely on automatic flash exposure control. Many creative tasks are made possible by using extremely fast HSS shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 with the Retra Pro flash in manual mode. The TTL converter firmware also has some other important updates related to its common functionality. The Retra PRO profile can be set by the user üvia the TTL converter's built-in rotary switch. The TTL/M modes can be switched underwater simply by using the camera name or the flash button. In manual mode, the flash intensity can be adjusted manually üvia the camera wheel/scale, but also üvia the flash control knob. (+/-) TTL flash compensation is supported by the firmware, the full range is available via the camera control in the range -3ev......+3ev. The firmware supports sync settings for the 1-st /2-nd curtain and the rear curtain. Continuous (serial) recording is supported. The HSS firmware of the TTL converter supports the HSS functionality of the Retra Pro flash. The built-in rotary switch must be set to the Retra Pro profile (position - "7"). Available HSS shutter speeds for Sony A7-A9: 1/320 ....1/8000 sec. The Retra flash allows the HSS flash intensity to be adjusted with the rotary knob. In the updated firmware, switching to HSS shutter speeds is also included in the general functionality of the TTL converter (also for all other positions of the rotary switch), - usable for shooting with ambient light at high shutter speeds if required. However, the X-Sync speed limit (1/250 for Sony A7-A9) is still automatically supported for TTL modes, as required for mono flash TTL underwater flash. Incredibly long battery life in the TTL converter: 1-3 years of continuous operation. The product has extremely low power consumption. The converter features an automatic on/off switching module that saves battery power. No mechanical switch is required to switch UW Technics TTL converters on and off. The TTL converter firmware includes TTL profiles for the following underwater flashes: Retra Pro, Inon Z-330/ Z-240/S-2000, Sea&Sea YS-D2/ YS-D1/ YS-250, Ikelite DS-161/ DS-160 and Subtronic Pro-270/Pro-160. Each profile can be easily set by the user üvia an onboard switch. Full compatibility with all SONY mirrorless cameras, regardless of model and TTL protocol version.

Installing vacuum valve to housing Remove the plug of the M14 accessory port from the housing. Remove the cap from the vacuum valve. Tighten the vacuum valve to the housing with the tool provided. Building up vacuum Remove the cap of the vacuum valve. Connect the hand pump to the valve and pump several times until it reaches the target vacuum level. The LED light will turn flashing yellow while vacuum is building up, then steady green when the target vacuum level is reached. Attention: After the target vacuum is reached, i.e. steady green light, attach the cap back to the vacuum valve. It is recommended to leave the housing for at least 20mins to ensure it is sealed. If the LED light changes from steady green light to rapidly flashing yellow light, that means there is a leakage and please check every O-ring and conduct the vacuum test again. Please ensure that the cap is attached back to the vacuum valve before going underwater. Vacuum can be released by pushing the red release button. Attention: Please DO NOT attempt to go over the designated vacuum level, i.e. stop pumping when the LED turn green. Excessive vacuum level may lead to the malfunction of the camera and lens. Note: Although the vacuum indicator is designated to compensate for a certain amount of temperature variation, it is recommended to conduct the vacuum test in an environment where the temperature is stable. After set up, the meaning of the LED indicator in the housing: Flashing “Blue” light: Standby mode. The moisture alarm is active, and the system is ready for vacuum indication whenever a vacuum is detected. Flashing “Red” light with beeping sound:Moisture is detected. Flashing “Yellow” light: Some vacuum is detected, target vacuum level is not reached. Steady “Green” light: Target vacuum level is reached. Rapidly flashing “Yellow” light: Vacuum is dropping. (Will occur only after target vacuum level is reached) Rapidly flashing “Red” light: Vacuum is totally lost. Circuit stalled until switched off. (Will occur only after target vacuum level is reached)

Macro

Super Macro Konverter SMC-1
THE FINEST MACRO ACCESSORY LENS FOR DSLR/MIL CAMERAS The Nauticam Super Macro Converter 1 (SMC-1) is the first underwater macro conversion lens that is fully optimized for in water use. This unique and innovative lens will change the way that underwater macro photography is done. BREAKTHROUGH LENS DESIGN Prior to the Super Macro Converter, achieving "super macro" underwater meant using tools that were designed for in air use. These tools simply do not take into account the physics of shooting in water. The SMC takes a radically different approach: treat the system ? camera, lens, port, air, and water ? as a whole, and account for the air-water interfaces in a conversion lens design to achieve the best image quality possible. The improvement is stunning, measurable and a new standard in underwater macro imaging has been established. "This is the sharpest accessory macro lens I have used. Something that it is truly remarkable because it is also the most powerful. Fantastic performance from the centre of the frame to the corners. It is a lens that pushes back the boundaries of the types of photos we can take underwater." -Dr. Alex Mustard (www.amustard.com) Three key advantages to this internationally patent pending new optical design: Higher Magnification Than Other Popular Super Macro Tools with Increased Working Distance Better Edge to Edge Image Quality, Higher Contrast, and Lower Color Fringing Compatibility with "short" macro lenses that traditionally have not worked well with super macro accessories, like Canon EF-S 60mm, Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S., Olympus 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 ED M.Zuiko EZ Micro 4/3 Lens, and Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro. Edward Lai, Managing Director of Nauticam, has utilized a revolutionary approach in developing the SMC. This is a completely new lens design, developed through hundreds of engineering hours utilizing computer software to model the optical properties of the complete underwater imaging system. Incorporating these factors into the design yields amazing sharpness, contrast, and clarity that isn't available from a simple magnifying lens for use in air sealed in a waterproof enclosure. UNCOMPROMISED OPTICAL QUALITY The Super Macro Converter is constructed from lenses are precision crafted of specially formulated low dispersion optical grade glass, ground to the most demanding standards. These exceptional measures, enhanced by broadband anti-refective coatings effectively reduce common optical issues such as chromatic aberrations, coma, spherical aberration, and field deformation associated with underwater macro photography using traditional magnifying lenses. These optics are assembled in a rugged hard anodized aluminum housing, and nitrogen purged during assembly to eliminate fogging. STUNNING MAGNIFICATION When combined with a full frame camera and a 100mm or 105mm macro lens, the device converts the optical system to provide a maximum of 2.3X magnification factor. In other words, a subject area of 15.6mm X 10.4mm will fill the whole frame of a 36mm X 24mm sensor. IMPROVED SHARPNESS AND CONTRAST As the Super Macro Converter is optimized explicitly for using together with a macro lens underwater, images captured exhibit exceptional sharpness compared with conventional magnification lenses. Thanks to the broadband multi-layer anti-reflection coating on each surface of the lenses, images also exhibit higher contrast. SUPERB LIGHT TRANSMISSION All the lens elements installed inside the SMC are optically optimized to appropriate diameters so as to provide maximum light transmission. The SMC doesn't suffer from vignette issues under even the most extreme conditions. The broad band multi-layer anti-reflection coating on all surfaces also greatly improves light transmission. OPTIMIZED FOR AUTOFOCUS By utilizing a specially developed algorithm in the optimization process, the SMC renders superior image quality over the full focusing range of the camera lens (which becomes ~50 to ~100 mm in front of the SMC). Also benefitting from the high brightness and contrast of the image, the autofocus system of the camera usually works acceptably well within this range. AMPLE WORKING DISTANCE Even at the maximum 2.3X magnification, there is still more than 50mm of working distance between the front element and the subject with 100/105mm macro lenses. This working distance is crucial when capturing behavior with skittish subjects. RESOLUTION High resolution was a primary design goal of the SMC project. This has been achieved using computer aided optimization and high grade optical glasses with unique refractive and dispersion properties. Images taken with this new system exhibit very high resolution and quality. Results have exceeded expectations, and these images rival the quality of the macro lens in air. SMOOTH BOKEH The Converter retains the optical properties of the macro lens for the whole system underwater, resulting in a blurred (out of focus) background that has a pleasing smoothness and creamy look, without the normal purple and green fringing. AVOIDING DIFFRACTION Due to the overall superior optical performance of the SMC it is possible to shoot larger apertures with excellent image quality. This avoids reaching the diffraction limit of high resolution sensors, and allows selective focus effects with narrow depth of field in super macro images.
