HAN: NA-A7IV

It's been three years since the release of the Sony α7III full-frame mirrorless camera and the followup α7IV delivers many of the new features we've seen in other models packaged into this true hybrid imaging system.  A new high-resolution 33MP BSI sensor powered by the BIONZ XR processor delivers 4k60p internal capture without crop in 4:2:2 10-bit 600Mbps quality or 30p downsampled from the full 7K sensor width.  Paired with massively improved autofocus, 15+ stops of dynamic range and new Active Mode 5-axis stabilization makes this a powerful high resolution photo and video platform worthy of the α7 badging.

THE SONY ALPHA 7 Mark IV Camera

The Sony α7 line of full-frame mirrorless cameras has long been at the forefront of offering a variety of models with similar form factor that are geared towards different shooting styles.  With the α7 RIII and RIV, the focus was on low-light video-centric and ultra high resolution respectively while the α7IV marries the two to create a true hybrid shooting platform.  The Exmor R backside-illuminated 33MP full-frame sensor delivers high resolution still photos while leveraging the large sensor size to provide ultra-sharp and color-rich video downsampled from the full 7K sensor width.

Camera Specs

  • 33MP full-frame Exmor R™ BSI CMOS sensor with BIONZ XR™ processor
  • 4K 60p 10-bit 4:2:2 video without crop
  • 4K 30p 10-bit 4:2:2 downsampled from full sensor width 7K w/o pixel binning
  • Real-time Eye-AF for humans and animals
  • S-Log3 gamma for maximum Dyanmic Range capture
  • 5-axis in-body image stabilization

AUTOFOCUS

The α7IV's improved autofocus system borrows heavily from Sony's other α series releases of late using their Fast Hybrid AF system which combines phase-detection and contrast-detection to provide fast and accurate focus.  The AF area is expanded to cover almost 94% of the frame with 759 AF-points.  Sony's latest Real Time Tracking and Eye AF modes promise to provide both accurate focus tracking for stills and video.  A new Focus Map feature allows for easier visualization of depth of field when filming. to help insure the critical parts of your subject are sharp.

4K VIDEO

4K 60p video captured with 10-bit 4:2:2 quality at up yo 600Mbps without crop sets the α7IV squarely with its peers in video capabilities.  Adding in the option to capture 30p downsampled from the full 7K sensor width gives the user the option to choose the right mode for their shooting style.  Capturing video in the S-Log3 gamma profile gives access to the camera's full 15+ stops of dynamic range for increased latitude in post processing.

IMPROVED CONTROLS

In addition to upgrading the autofocus, video and still capture  capabilities of the camera, the α7IV also now has the option to maintain discrete settings for video and still modes.  The dedicated dial atop the camera makes switching between modes hassle free.  The menu system has also been upgraded to make navigation easier and more similar to other recent models.

NAUTICAM NA-A7IV UNDERWATER HOUSING

The NA-A7IV underwater housing by Nauticam is designed as an optimized solution for both underwater still and moving image capture.  Outfitted with Nauticam's extensive lineup of accessories, the NA-A7IV can be customized to excel in either role.  The latest in a long lineup of Sony mirrorless system housings, the NA-A7IV features the same intuitively placed controls, easy setup, and rugged reliability user's have come to expect.

MISSION CONTROL

Never miss a shot looking for a button or dial.  Regardless of where the control may be found on the camera, Nauticam engineers have placed that control on the housing where it is needed most.  Essential dials and buttons are within easy reach of the reinforced ergonomic handles.  Atop the housing, a new dedicated lever allows quick switching between Still, Movie and S&Q (VFR Video) modes.  A dual thumb lever near the right handle actuates the REC and AF-ON buttons and a single lever near the left handle is for PLAYBACK.

HDMI 2.0

A large bore M24 bulkhead is located at the front of the housing for use with HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 1.4 (with a step-down adapter to M16) external monitors and recorders.  An additional M10 threaded mounting position near the front center of the housing also makes using an external monitor even easier.  The A7IV can output 4:2:2 10-bit 4K at up to 60fps to external recorders allowing for recording in edit-friendly codecs such as ProRes.  See the resources sidebar for additional details and recommended setups.

PREMIUM PROFESSIONAL OPTICS

Built around the N100 Port System for Sony E-Mount, the NA-A7IV can support a wide variety of native lenses with a selection of Optical Glass and Acrylic ports.  When used with an E-Mount to EF-mount lens adapter and an N100 to N120 adapter (see Resources sidebar for supported adapters), the NA-A7IV can be used with the Canon N120 EF-Mount port system, expanding the capabilities of the system even further.  Going beyond conventional optics the NA-A7IV can leverage the unparalleled optical quality of Nauticam's Water Contact optics such as the WACP-1 which offers up to 130º field-of-view, full zoom through, an almost 0" minimum focus distance with supported lenses.  For macro, the SMC-1 and SMC-2 deliver tack-sharp super-macro magnification levels up to 4x with the Sony 90mm macro lens.

VACUUM CHECK AND LEAK DETECTION

The housing comes with electronics pre-installed for Nauticam's Vacuum Check and Leak Detection system, requiring only the optional M14 Vacuum Valve (25624). This monitoring system provides constant updates on the water tight and safe-to-dive status of the housing. A simple color coded LED lighting system lets the user know that the vacuum is solid, or that the housing is losing vacuum. Leak detection is built into the same circuit, so if there is water intrusion, an audible and visual indication will occur. The Nauticam system is temperature compensated, eliminating false alarms caused by a change in outside temperature, or from a camera heating up on an action packed dive.

STROBE TRIGGERING

Triggering of external strobes is accomplished via the integrated fiber-optic bulkheads when using the optional Mini Flash Trigger for Sony (26302).  Electronic triggering is also via an optional Nikonos Bulkhead.  Note that when using this with the Vacuum Valve will require the optional M14 Offset Connector with Vacuum Valve II (25026).

Macro

Super Macro Konverter SMC-1
THE FINEST MACRO ACCESSORY LENS FOR DSLR/MIL CAMERAS The Nauticam Super Macro Converter 1 (SMC-1) is the first underwater macro conversion lens that is fully optimized for in water use. This unique and innovative lens will change the way that underwater macro photography is done. BREAKTHROUGH LENS DESIGN Prior to the Super Macro Converter, achieving "super macro" underwater meant using tools that were designed for in air use. These tools simply do not take into account the physics of shooting in water. The SMC takes a radically different approach: treat the system ? camera, lens, port, air, and water ? as a whole, and account for the air-water interfaces in a conversion lens design to achieve the best image quality possible. The improvement is stunning, measurable and a new standard in underwater macro imaging has been established. "This is the sharpest accessory macro lens I have used. Something that it is truly remarkable because it is also the most powerful. Fantastic performance from the centre of the frame to the corners. It is a lens that pushes back the boundaries of the types of photos we can take underwater." -Dr. Alex Mustard (www.amustard.com) Three key advantages to this internationally patent pending new optical design: Higher Magnification Than Other Popular Super Macro Tools with Increased Working Distance Better Edge to Edge Image Quality, Higher Contrast, and Lower Color Fringing Compatibility with "short" macro lenses that traditionally have not worked well with super macro accessories, like Canon EF-S 60mm, Panasonic Leica DG Macro-Elmarit 45mm f/2.8 ASPH. MEGA O.I.S., Olympus 12-50mm f/3.5-6.3 ED M.Zuiko EZ Micro 4/3 Lens, and Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f/2.8 Macro. Edward Lai, Managing Director of Nauticam, has utilized a revolutionary approach in developing the SMC. This is a completely new lens design, developed through hundreds of engineering hours utilizing computer software to model the optical properties of the complete underwater imaging system. Incorporating these factors into the design yields amazing sharpness, contrast, and clarity that isn't available from a simple magnifying lens for use in air sealed in a waterproof enclosure. UNCOMPROMISED OPTICAL QUALITY The Super Macro Converter is constructed from lenses are precision crafted of specially formulated low dispersion optical grade glass, ground to the most demanding standards. These exceptional measures, enhanced by broadband anti-refective coatings effectively reduce common optical issues such as chromatic aberrations, coma, spherical aberration, and field deformation associated with underwater macro photography using traditional magnifying lenses. These optics are assembled in a rugged hard anodized aluminum housing, and nitrogen purged during assembly to eliminate fogging. STUNNING MAGNIFICATION When combined with a full frame camera and a 100mm or 105mm macro lens, the device converts the optical system to provide a maximum of 2.3X magnification factor. In other words, a subject area of 15.6mm X 10.4mm will fill the whole frame of a 36mm X 24mm sensor. IMPROVED SHARPNESS AND CONTRAST As the Super Macro Converter is optimized explicitly for using together with a macro lens underwater, images captured exhibit exceptional sharpness compared with conventional magnification lenses. Thanks to the broadband multi-layer anti-reflection coating on each surface of the lenses, images also exhibit higher contrast. SUPERB LIGHT TRANSMISSION All the lens elements installed inside the SMC are optically optimized to appropriate diameters so as to provide maximum light transmission. The SMC doesn't suffer from vignette issues under even the most extreme conditions. The broad band multi-layer anti-reflection coating on all surfaces also greatly improves light transmission. OPTIMIZED FOR AUTOFOCUS By utilizing a specially developed algorithm in the optimization process, the SMC renders superior image quality over the full focusing range of the camera lens (which becomes ~50 to ~100 mm in front of the SMC). Also benefitting from the high brightness and contrast of the image, the autofocus system of the camera usually works acceptably well within this range. AMPLE WORKING DISTANCE Even at the maximum 2.3X magnification, there is still more than 50mm of working distance between the front element and the subject with 100/105mm macro lenses. This working distance is crucial when capturing behavior with skittish subjects. RESOLUTION High resolution was a primary design goal of the SMC project. This has been achieved using computer aided optimization and high grade optical glasses with unique refractive and dispersion properties. Images taken with this new system exhibit very high resolution and quality. Results have exceeded expectations, and these images rival the quality of the macro lens in air. SMOOTH BOKEH The Converter retains the optical properties of the macro lens for the whole system underwater, resulting in a blurred (out of focus) background that has a pleasing smoothness and creamy look, without the normal purple and green fringing. AVOIDING DIFFRACTION Due to the overall superior optical performance of the SMC it is possible to shoot larger apertures with excellent image quality. This avoids reaching the diffraction limit of high resolution sensors, and allows selective focus effects with narrow depth of field in super macro images.

M14 Vacuum Valve II
Installing vacuum valve to housing Remove the plug of the M14 accessory port from the housing. Remove the cap from the vacuum valve. Tighten the vacuum valve to the housing with the tool provided. Building up vacuum Remove the cap of the vacuum valve. Connect the hand pump to the valve and pump several times until it reaches the target vacuum level. The LED light will turn flashing yellow while vacuum is building up, then steady green when the target vacuum level is reached. Attention: After the target vacuum is reached, i.e. steady green light, attach the cap back to the vacuum valve. It is recommended to leave the housing for at least 20mins to ensure it is sealed. If the LED light changes from steady green light to rapidly flashing yellow light, that means there is a leakage and please check every O-ring and conduct the vacuum test again. Please ensure that the cap is attached back to the vacuum valve before going underwater. Vacuum can be released by pushing the red release button. Attention: Please DO NOT attempt to go over the designated vacuum level, i.e. stop pumping when the LED turn green. Excessive vacuum level may lead to the malfunction of the camera and lens. Note: Although the vacuum indicator is designated to compensate for a certain amount of temperature variation, it is recommended to conduct the vacuum test in an environment where the temperature is stable. After set up, the meaning of the LED indicator in the housing: Flashing “Blue” light: Standby mode. The moisture alarm is active, and the system is ready for vacuum indication whenever a vacuum is detected. Flashing “Red” light with beeping sound:Moisture is detected. Flashing “Yellow” light: Some vacuum is detected, target vacuum level is not reached. Steady “Green” light: Target vacuum level is reached. Rapidly flashing “Yellow” light: Vacuum is dropping. (Will occur only after target vacuum level is reached) Rapidly flashing “Red” light: Vacuum is totally lost. Circuit stalled until switched off. (Will occur only after target vacuum level is reached)

The Full Frame Angle Viewfinder also provides more clearance for your regulator allowing for more a more comfortable viewing position, installs in seconds without tools and retains the hassle-free underwater dioptric adjustment feature. The viewfinder can also be rotated when using the camera in a portrait orientation. INTRODUCING NAUTICAM FULL FRAME ANGLE VIEWFINDER 32°/ 1:1 For over a decade, Nauticam’s Enhanced Viewfinders have been known for superior optics, tack sharp performance and first-of-its-kind underwater dioptric adjustment. Anyone who has used these instruments has grown to appreciate what an asset they can be to any underwater photographer. But the camera world has seen radical changes in technology in the last ten years, including ever increasing size and resolution of Electronic Viewfinders (EVFs) found in the latest high-end mirrorless cameras. These newer EVFs challenge even the finest enhanced viewfinders for underwater housings. In response to this technological evolution, Nauticam is excited to introduce the next generation of Enhanced Viewfinders designed to meet and exceed the requirements of all the current digital camera EVFs, as well as what is expected in the near future. The new Full Frame Straight Viewfinder employs entirely new optics to allow distortion free viewing without clipping the image frame. With the new viewfinders, reviewing images in playback or navigating the menus through the EVF has never been so easy. 32º/1:1 VS. 42º/0.8:1 Because different photographers have different needs and priorities, Nauticam offers the Full Frame Angle Viewfinder in two options. The 1:1 viewfinder option offers the most magnification available for underwater viewing while preserving the image field and surrounding data on most cameras. This viewfinder is a breakthrough in performance on high resolution EVFs and is an absolute joy on traditional DSLRs. The level of detail rendered is unequaled in the industry. For those utilizing cameras with known EVF challenges such as the Sony’s A1 and A7SIII cameras, or just for the photographer who wants as much working room on the viewfinder field-of-view as possible, Nauticam offers the new 0.8:1 version. The 0.8:1 viewfinder offers an equally crisp and bright EVF display as the 1:1 viewfinder, with slightly less magnification for uncompromising corner to corner image viewing or better imaging of shooting data. HASSLE-FREE UNDERWATER DIOPTRIC ADJUSTMENT The much-loved dioptric adjustment is still featured and allows for easy eyesight adjustment in-water without disassembly of the viewfinder.  as well as the simple installation and removal that takes only seconds. TOOL FREE INSTALLATION The Nauticam Full Frame Angle Viewfinder can be installed in seconds without any tools.  The viewfinder is a direct replacement of the stock 0.66X viewfinder on DSLR and many full-frame mirrorless housings but requires an easily installed adapter on certain MIL housings. The viewfinder can also be rotated when using the camera in a portrait orientation. Whether future proofing a viewfinder purchase for your current rig, or patiently waiting for a viewfinder worthy of the latest pro mirrorless camera you are diving, these cutting-edge viewfinders are the new industry standard to be looking at. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/1AeT-02Mrdo?controls=0" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen></iframe>
