TTL and HSS on RetraFlash

Fantastic TTL accuracy allows photographers to relax and rely completely on automatic flash exposure control. Many creative tasks are made possible by using extremely fast HSS shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 with the Retra Pro flash in manual mode. The TTL converter firmware also has some other important updates related to its common functionality.

  • The Retra PRO profile can be set by the user üt via the TTL converter's built-in rotary switch.
  • The TTL/M modes can be switched underwater simply by using the camera name or the flash button.
  • In manual mode, the flash intensity can be adjusted manually üvia the camera wheel/scale, but also üvia the flash control knob.
  • (+/-) TTL flash compensation is supported by the firmware, the full range is available via the camera control in the range -3ev......+3ev.
  • The firmware supports sync settings for the 1-st /2-nd curtain and the rear curtain.
  • Continuous (serial) recording is supported.
  • The HSS firmware of the TTL converter supports the HSS functionality of the Retra Pro flash. The built-in rotary switch must be set to the Retra Pro profile (position - "7"). Available HSS shutter speeds for Sony A7-A9: 1/320 ....1/8000 sec. The Retra flash allows the HSS flash intensity to be set using the rotary knob.
  • In the updated firmware, switching to HSS shutter speeds is also included in the general functionality of the TTL converter (also for all other positions of the rotary switch), - usable for shooting with ambient light at high shutter speeds if required. However, the X-Sync speed limit (1/250 for Sony A7-A9) is still automatically supported for TTL modes, as required for mono flash TTL underwater flash.

YS-D3 DUO Underwater Strobe
High-spec underwater strobe with large light output The YS-D3 DUO by Sea&Sea is a high-specification underwater strobe with three shooting modes: DS-TTL, RC mode, and manual. The YS-D3 DUO delivers even and uniform light distribution with a large light output of GN33. Custom settings allow the strobe to be used with high precision with a variety of cameras and shooting styles. Shooting Mode The mode switch can be used to switch between "DS-TTL", "RC mode", and "Manual". It is conveniently identifiable by color. Blue: DS-TTL Red: RC mode Orange: Manual 1 Highly accurate DS-TTL dimming DS-TTL dimming accuracy has been greatly improved by adopting a newly designed light receiving sensor. By applying detailed custom settings, it can be used with high accuracy with a wide variety of cameras of multiple brands. *When shooting TTL with a camera of a brand other than OM SYSTEM (OLYMPUS), select DS-TTL as the shooting mode. *Pre-custom settings must be made for each camera in advance when shooting with DS-TTL. In DS-TTL mode. Exposure compensation can be made with the light level control dial on the right. +2.0 to -2.0 Highly accurate DS-TTL dimming The "RC System" is a flash system for OM SYSTEM digital cameras, and the YS-D3 DUO was developed in collaboration with OM Digital Solutions to incorporate the RC mode. RC mode is a light control mode in which the camera automatically controls the flash output based on the brightness through the lens. The YS-D3 DUO is equipped with a more precise "RC mode" that was developed based on system information officially provided by OM Digital Solutions. Light source This is a high-performance strobe that pursues quality of light, and its high luminous flux and wide beam angle are effective for wide-angle photography with fish-eye lenses and other wide-angle lenses. The strobe also features our proprietary light distribution technology. High light intensity GN33 The light output has a guide number (GN) of 33, one of the highest among general-purpose underwater strobes. The use of two discharge tubes increases power and achieves GN 33 at full flashing. Heavy underwater weight requires unexpected force to operate the clamp, but the YS-D3 DUO is unaffected by buoyancy, so operation is smooth. Even if you change the strobe position, the underwater balance of the entire housing set does not change significantly and you can feel how easy it is to handle. Two patterns of target lights The LED target light function is useful for focusing and checking the beam angle of the strobe. Choose either 300 lumens or 150 lumens depending on the situation. 300 lumen 150 lumen One-touch battery replacement The power source is AA batteries, which are widely distributed in general. Four of the same type (1.5V alkaline AA batteries and 1.2V nickel-hydrogen AA batteries). The battery box is opened and closed by a bayonet type that does not put a burden on the O-ring. THE NAUTICAM NA-D6 UNDERWATER HOUSING Nauticam's lineup of aluminum housings are designed with the user in mind offering easy assembly, proven durability, intuitive control placement and an extensive range of optics and accessories.  The NA-D6 is designed specifically for the Nikon D6 to take advantage of the camera's customizability and powerful autofocus features. MISSION CONTROL The NA-D6 is designed with the Mission Control philosophy, placing the most used controls within easy reach from the ergonomic handles.  The NA-D6 features double thumb levers at the rear of the housing that trigger the AF-ON and REC buttons of the camera on the right side and PLAYBACK/INFO on the left.  Nested levers for ISO and the 'Pv' control are also located near the right handle for easy access.  A dual action lever for 'Fn1' and 'Fn2' customizable buttons a the front of the camera has been redesigned for enhanced usability over the NA-D5 version. OPTICS AND ACCESSORIES The Nauticam N120 Port System supports a wide variety of Nikon F Mount lenses with both optical glass and acrylic port options.  The NA-D6 can also take advantage of Nauticam's water-contact optics such as the WACP-1, WACP-2 as well as the SMC-1 and SMC-2 which are designed to deliver the highest image quality possible underwater for both wide-angle and macro. Nauticam's magnifying viewfinders, available in both 45º and 180º versions allow for easier use of the D6's large bright optical viewfinder and can be installed in minuted without tools.

Underwater photographers rely on the diversity of the environment to push their art to its limits, and not just underwater. With the introduction of the Nikon Z7 and Z6, the full-frame mirrorless camera market has important new competitors to push the segment even further. Nikon's first full-frame mirrorless cameras, the Z7 and Z6 offer underwater photographers the same legendary Nikon sensors with the versatility of an electronic viewfinder and the more compact form factor of a mirrorless system. The NA-Z7V supports both the Z6 and Z7 models and features the larger M28 bulkhead that supports HDMI 2.0 connections required for the Atomos Ninja V recorder/monitor. The Nikon Z6 and Z7 cameras For many full-frame Nikon photographers, the appeal of a mirrorless camera was tempered by the thought of having to invest in and master a new system by switching to another ecosystem like Sony. For those who were waiting for a mirrorless system that utilises Nikon's image processing technology and ergonomics, the wait is over. The Z6 and Z7 cameras have an identical body, differing only in features - an ideal feature when it comes to housing the camera for underwater use. Both camera bodies are built around the new Z-mount. With an incredibly large mount diameter of 55 mm (17% larger than F-mount) and a very short flange distance, the Z-mount offers a maximum aperture of F0.95. While the current selection of Z-mount lenses is limited, almost the entire range of F-mount lenses can be used with the optional FTZ adapter. When using the adapter, lenses without VR also benefit from the in-camera stabilisation. VR and Z-mount lenses get 5-axis stabilisation, while non-VR F-mount lenses have 3-axis stabilisation. There is also a special e-VR (electronic VR) that combines optical and electronic stabilisation for video recording. Both the Z6 and Z7 can internally record UHD 4K at 30 frames per second or 1080 HD at up to 120 frames per second at 144 Mbps. Recording utilises the full width of the sensor and both cameras are capable of outputting UHD 4K in 10-bit N-log via HDMI, supporting start/stop control. The electronic OLED viewfinder (EVF) of the Z6 and Z7 offers 100% image coverage at Quad VGA resolution (3.69 million dots). When triggering external flashes, both cameras have a 1/200 X-Sync shutter speed. Nikon Z7 Camera The Z7 has a high-resolution 45.7MP FX-format sensor that allows shooting at up to 9 FPS. The Z7 offers a wide ISO range of 64-25,600 and autofocus is achieved with 493 on-sensor AF points covering 90% of the frame. The camera intelligently switches between contrast and phase detection points to achieve precise focusing regardless of lighting conditions. Videos are recorded internally at up to UHD 4K 30p without cropping the field of view. 273 on-sensor focus points cover 90% of the subject and the Z 6 intelligently switches between contrast and phase detection points to ensure precise autofocus. Main features of the camera: 24.5MP FX-format sensor with OLPF 12 FPS continuous shooting ISO range 100-51,200 UHD 4K 30p recording without FOV crop 10bit N-log UHD 4K output via HDMI with start/stop support 5-axis VR stabilisation (with Z-mount lenses) 4K time-lapse CF Express ready (currently only XQD) The Nauticam NA-Z7V underwater housing Nauticam has produced a variety of housings for Nikon DSLR cameras and is not new to the mirrorless format. Nauticam has developed housings for full-frame, APS-C and MFT mirrorless cameras from various camera manufacturers. The NA-Z7V, just like Nikon's Z6/7 cameras, is an evolutionary step in underwater housings that seamlessly combine the Nikon F-mount and the new Z-mount in one housing. F- and Z-mount support The Nauticam NA-Z7V body not only allows the use of the new Z-mount Nikon glass, but also F-mount lenses with the Nikon FTZ adapter. This is crucial as the new Z-mount lenses will be phased in over the next few years. The Nauticam NA-Z7V body has two lens release buttons suitable for either F- or Z-mount lenses. When switching between F-mount and Z-mount lenses, the camera must be removed from the housing to remove the adapter. If you are using the F- or Z-mount system, use the appropriate lens release button to change the lens without removing the camera from the body. A vacuum reset switch is also located under the tray so that the back of the housing does not need to be opened when changing lenses or adapters. Intelligent operation Nauticam's engineers are obsessed with functionality, which is evident in the placement of the essential controls.  Regardless of where the controls are located on the camera, the Nauticam housing puts them where you need them underwater.  For those switching between photo and video modes, there is an easy-to-reach switch on the right rear of the housing.  The right double thumb lever, easily reached from the right grip, gives access to the AF-on or Record button.  Between the double thumb lever and the multi-step shutter release is an ISO lever that allows quick changes in sensitivity. The left double tick lever provides access to the DISP and playback controls.  The zoom in and zoom out controls on the right rear of the camera housing are on the left side of the housing and are in a location more familiar to Nauticam housing users. The switch that toggles between the LCD display and the electronic viewfinder, an important and widely used control with mirrorless systems, is within easy reach near the left grip.   Front and rear controls are easily accessible via the familiar large knurled wheels on the right handle.  The ergonomic housing handles are rubberised and feature stainless steel stiffening brackets to ensure a stable platform when using large strobes or video lights attached to the pre-installed 1-inch ball heads. The NA-Z7II supports both the Z 7II and Z 6II models and features the larger-bore M28 bulkhead that supports HDMI 2.0 connections needed for the Atomos Ninja V Recorder/Monitor. THE NIKON Z 6II AND Z 7II CAMERAS For many full-frame Nikon shooters the appeal of a mirrorless camera had been tempered by the thought of having to invest in and master a new system by moving to another ecosystem such as Sony. EXTERNAL FLASH TRIGGERING The NA-D850 uses the same integrated LED flash triggering system found in NA-D5 and NA-D500. This low profile housing mounted circuit board is convenient, easy to use, and reliable. This optical flash trigger can fire at the full 7 fps of the camera, making it the ideal solution for the rapid fire fast action shooting that the D850 is so well suited for. The new Nikon D500 may be a reboot of the popular segment last featuring D300s six years ago. It could be the D400 that never came, or it might be an entirely new product segment. Regardless of classification, there has never been a Nikon DX camera with this level of autofocus and continuous shooting performance before, and D500 provides a compelling alternative to pro bodies for fast action capture in remote environments. THE NIKON D500 The D500 features autofocus speed, continuous shooting speed, and a deep buffer unlike any DX body to come before it. It uses the same Multi-CAM 20K focus system as the professional D5, with 153 focus points (99 cross-type sensors). The D500 has more cross-type focus points than the previous pro body D4s had total focus points, and they are spread wider across the frame. The difference between D500 and previous APS-C systems is even more striking; both the Nikon D300s and D7200 feature a total of 51 focus points (15 cross-type). The D500 is a shooting experience can really only be compared to that of pro-body cameras, but in a compact body size and attractive price point. The D500 also introduces a new, 180k pixel RGB metering sensor. This metering sensor drives the advanced Nikon exposure system, and is also used to provide scene data for 3D focus tracking, improving accuracy. The 10 fps continuous shooting speed (with AF) and a 200 shot RAW buffer (using XQD cards) keeps up with even the fastest action. This is an incredible increase in continuous shooting capability. The D7200 camera can only buffer 17 14-bit Raw frames, and the Canon 7D Mark II can only buffer 31. The D500 viewfinder is the largest Nikon has ever featured on an APS-C camera, with 1.0x magnification and 100% coverage. The EN-EL15 battery is capable of 1,240 shots per charge (according to the CIPA rating). The camera can record 4k video at 30 frames per second, and is weather sealed for use in extreme environments. EXTERNAL FLASH TRIGGERING The entire external flash triggering system has has been reworked from the ground up in the NA-D500, increasing ease of use, setup convenience, and reliability. A new LED flash triggering system is standard in every housing. This optical flash trigger can fire at the full 10 fps of the camera, making it the ideal solution for the rapid fire fast action shooting that the D500 is so well suited for. Optical systems, with fiber optic cables linking the external flashes to the housing, are far more reliable than any electrical sync cable system. The LED trigger circuitboard is mounted directly to the front of the housing, and connected to the camera with a hotshoe cable. This new system is more powerful than the hotshoe mounted LED triggers used in the past, and is compatible with all currently available optically triggered flashes. Powered by two CR2032 batteries, battery life is measured in the tens of thousands of flashes, driven by incredibly efficient electronics. With good batteries, we expect 3-5 years of service, up to 50,000 exposures. Users of legacy flashes without optical triggering are able to add accessory Nikonos (26074) or Ikelite (26075) style bulkheads for electrical flash sync. These bulkheads plug into the LED trigger board for clean cable routing, and reliable connection. The redesigned LED Flash Triggering System has allowed for a much lower housing height. This the smallest, easiest to pack Nauticam DSLR housing for Nikon yet! ACCESSORY TTL CONVERTER The NA-D500 is compatible with the Nauticam TTL Converter (26308). This user installable upgrade provides accurate automatic TTL flash exposure with a number of popular flashes, and offers both optical and electrical strobe triggering in a single unit. Optical triggering, using an LED integrated into the board and fiber optic cable, works well with modern flashes like Inon Z-240, Sea & Sea YS-D2, and more. Electrical triggering supports Ikelite DS- and Sea & Sea YS-250 strobes connected via an electrical sync cord. To trigger your strobes electrically (YS-250 and Ikelite), add the appropriate electrical bulkhead and connect to the flash trigger board via two red Micro-MaTch connectors. Two new electrical bulkheads have been created just for this purpose. Electrical Bulkhead: NA26074 Nikonos Style Bulkhead NA26075 Ikelite Style Bulkhead UNMATCHED ERGONOMICS The right grip is mission control for the D500 camera, accessing many of the frequently used camera functions. Oversized levers are identifiable by feel, allowing tactile operation while framing with the optical viewfinder. The most frequently accessed fingertip controls (Shutter Release, Main Command Dial, and Sub Command Dial, Video Record, and AF-ON) are located here. ISO, the primary exposure control used by DSLR video shooters, is accessed by a convenient thumb lever under the right grip. INFO, useful for calling up the camera settings on the 3.2? rear color LCD, is placed at the right thumb. A "pinky lever", placed just under the front sub-command dial, accesses the Fn1 button. This can be linked to a number of assignable functions. The new AF-Mode Lever is a significant improvement, and one based on feedback from Nauticam customers in the field. Nikon AF Area modes have become so powerful that shooters are regularly switching between 3D Tracking, Auto Area AF, and Single Area modes. The AF-Mode lever is now easily located by feel from the left handle! A separate AF-M lever is positioned above this lever, and identifiable by feel. A double thumb lever accesses playback and the assignable Fn2 Button. EXTENSIVE CUSTOMIZATION FOR A TAILORED ERGONOMIC EXPERIENCE The Nikon D500 camera in a Nauticam NA-D500 housing offers three assignable pushbuttons (AF-ON, Fn1, and Fn2) that can all be accessed from the housing handles. These custom functions can be overwhelming at first, but the creative options they unlock can be incredibly valuable in the field. In short, these assignable buttons mean less time digging through camera menus to change camera functions, and more time capturing the scene as it unfolds. There isn't a right way configure these systems. Every photographer and shooting scenario has unique demands. Some ideas are listed below: 1 Step Spd / Aperture, allows changing exposure settings in full f-stop increments. Think about changing from a wide angle scenic mode with relatively open aperture and slow shutter speed to a close focus wide angle shot that requires a closed aperture to shrink a sun-ball. My Menu, a customized panel with frequently accessed menus settings Access Top Item in MY MENU, actually jumps into a frequently accessed sub menu structure for the top level My Menu selection, saving at least two button presses. (ie min shutter speed in auto iso mode, or quickly define a preset white balance) Quickly access another metering mode, toggling between the selected metering pattern and an alternate that more appropriately evaluates the current scene. Flash disable / enable, this is a big one! Toggles external flashes on and off, allowing a switch between artificial light shooting (continuous shooting speed limited by flash recycle, and shutter speed limited by the strobe max sync speed at 1/250) to silhouette mode using only ambient light (full 12 fps continuous shooting speed, unrestricted flash sync speed). AF-area mode + AF-ON – very cool functionality, for a quick way of accessing a focus mode other than the mode currently assigned and activating it while held down. Placed at the right ring finger via the re-positioned Fn1 lever, the current focus mode be overridden with something like auto area focus for quick grab shots where there isn't time to move the selected autofocus point, or change focus area patterns. VIEWFINDERS The standard optical glass viewfinder is very good and travel friendly, but many photographers prefer the ease of a magnified viewfinder with adjustable diopter. Nauticam produces a "straight" 180º enlarging viewfinder and a 45º angled enlarging viewfinder to enhance the ease of close quarters work often associated with macro shooting. Both viewfinders have high quality optics, and allow bright viewing of the entire image. A patented external dioptric adjustment allows personal adjustment to a sharp-as-a-tack standard underwater and viewfinder changes can be executed in less than 30 seconds without using tools. Exceptional composition and focus accuracy have never been more accessible. PREMIUM PROFESSIONAL OPTICS Experienced shooters know a camera is only as good as the lens in front of it, and the same is true when choosing optics for an underwater camera system.
